2017 NFL mock draft: Trades aplenty in Round 1 in AA writer’s mock draft
By Matt Conner
Pick: 21
Team: Detroit Lions
Selection: Jabrill Peppers, S, Michigan
The Detroit Lions have been trying to build a defense to match their offense for years. The choice of Jabrill Pepers in the first round gives them a big step in that direction. Peppers reminds me a lot of former Steelers great Troy Polamalu. He’s a versatile safety who likes to be everywhere. Peppers has the speed to cover any holes in the zone, short or deep. He also has the power and speed to shut down any tight end in coverage and thumping ability to stuff the run.
Like Troy he will also be lethal to quarterbacks as a blitzer. He has had a few off the field issues, but a well-respected coach like Jim Caldwell should be able to keep him in line. Oh I forgot to mention he is one of the most dangerous return men in the draft. He makes two aspects of the team better just by stepping onto the field. It’s also a nice bonus for fans and perhaps some merchandise sales to bring in a local talent in the first round to add to the excitement. [Britt Zank]
