2017 NFL mock draft: Trades aplenty in Round 1 in AA writer’s mock draft
By Matt Conner
Pick: 18
Team: Tennessee Titans
Selection: Jarrad Davis, LB, Florida
With the 18th pick of the AA Staff Mock Draft, the Tennessee Titans select Jarrad Davis from Florida. Once again, rookie GM Lucas Hampton gave me a smile and answered my question of why this choice. “When I joined the Titans this offseason, I took it upon myself to evaluate the roster and where the needs were. One of those needs was the middle linebacker spot. The scouting reports on Davis came back very good. I was really impressed firstly with his speed. Davis can zip sideline to sideline in the blink of an eye. I sat with my scouting team on many occasions to watch film on Davis. The leadership he displayed on the field, rallying his teammates to big plays and victories. That really impressed us, we need a leader on our defense.”
I couldn’t help but think again on how I had seen this man with a few other teams. How was it possible? How was he able to run three or four teams at once? “Davis also displayed a great talent for playing the run. He is not afraid to plow through the offensive line and smash into the running back. He does something similar with blitzing. He basically ignores the offensive line and creates havoc in the backfield. Let’s also not forget his pass coverage skills. Davis will easily be able to lock down a tight end or running back going for that short pass. He has everything we were looking for in someone to build our defense around.”
He finished his answer and I decided to ask him about how he was able to run multiple teams. He just chuckled slightly and said to ask again after his final selection. I shook my head and went on to the next team, awaiting the next time Mr. Hampton would make a choice. [Lucas Hampton]
