2017 NFL mock draft: Trades aplenty in Round 1 in AA writer’s mock draft
By Matt Conner
Pick: 17
Team: Washington
Selection: Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
Coming into Washington, Dalvin Cook provides an immediate identity to the Redskins running game. Last season Rob Kelly and Matt Jones competed for the #1 spot, with Kelly ultimately winning the duel. However, Kelly is still raw and inconsistent, and with the 17th pick in the draft, the Redskins take arguably the top running back available overall. Cook’s lightning running ability would pair well with Kelly’s thunder, potentially giving the Redskins one of the best 1-2 punches in the NFL. And Dalvin Cook is no one trick pony having racked up 79 receptions for 935 yards and 2 touchdowns in three years at FSU.
After Cook’s somewhat disappointing combine, many detractors came out stating he’s not the back people think he is. Jimbo Fisher head coach at FSU simply said, “Turn on the tape” in defense of his running back. When you do turn on the tape you will find an electric home run hitting back with elite quickness and rare cutback ability. In an overall talent comparison, Cook may turn out to be the best back in this talented draft when all is said and done. [David Thomas]
