2017 NFL mock draft: Trades aplenty in Round 1 in AA writer’s mock draft
By Matt Conner
TRADE
New Orleans Saints receive: No. 30 (1st), No. 60 (2nd), 2018 1st round pick
Pittsburgh Steelers receive: No. 11 (1st)
Pick: 11
Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Selection: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
This past off-season was filled with constant drama surrounding whether future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (35) would announce his retirement. Within the past few weeks, Roethlisberger took to his personal website to announce that he would be returning this season.
This selection, while being a complete speculation selection, actually protects the Steelers organization moving forward. While being a top-5 AFC team on a consistent basis, this selection gives them leverage and security moving into the future. Though this would be a risky trade, the Steelers are one of only a few teams that are fully capable of taking a potential hit in the trade due to the strength of their current roster.
The current roster is filled with many blossoming young stars and the addition of Trubisky will give him the opportunity to learn from one of the best quarterback of the past decade. Most speculations surrounding Trubisky to this point suggest that he is highly regarded because of his potential, despite having only played in 13 collegiate games.
Since Trubisky has reportedly drawn the love of the Cleveland Browns, who hold two selections in the top 12 picks, the Steelers jump ahead of their second selection to grab the QB of the future. [Keaton Henry]
