NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks is a true believer in Alex Smith, saying he is “undoubtedly capable” of winning a Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs have an odd quandary at the quarterback position. Alex Smith, the incumbent starter, has won 41 games in his four seasons with the Chiefs. Not only has he guided them to their first playoff victory in decades, but he’s engineered the biggest comeback in franchise history, reeled off the longest winning streak in team history and has helped produce a winning culture in Kansas City.  Yet somehow, Smith remains one of the most polarizing players in the NFL and many Chiefs fans would love to see Smith replaced as the starter in Andy Reid’s offense.

Smith, the argument says, is a game manager and is actually limited the Chiefs from being all they can be. These fans imagine Jeremy Maclin, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce all gaining over 1,000 receiving yards if only someone with a cannon were under center. They point to the inability of Smith to put the team on his back and carry them to victory in the same way a Big Ben or Tom Brady can do. These are points to be considered for sure, but given that there’s no sure thing waiting out there to be claimed, Bucky Brooks, NFL.com analyst, says it’s silly to think that Smith cannot eventually win the big game. He’s already proven he can win so far, even if the biggest of wins remain elusive.

In a recent column, Brooks argued that Smith is “undoubtedly capable” of winning a Super Bowl with the Chiefs. He writes:

"As a result, I believe Smith is undoubtedly capable of guiding the Chiefs to the winner’s circle. While the road certainly is tough in the AFC, with the New England Patriots lording over the conference, Smith is good enough to get the Chiefs over the hump as long as his supporting cast remains strong on the perimeter. It won’t be sexy or spectacular, but winning is all that matters. And Smith has proven he can do just that in the NFL."

What’s interesting about Brooks’ column is that he even anonymously polls some NFL team execs and the answers are as split as the fans in Kansas City. Some think that Smith is the team’s ceiling while others think he’s an underrated quarterback.

It’s likely no one will ever know what to think of Smith’s legacy until one of two things happen: the Chiefs win a Super Bowl or at least advance to one with Smith under center or the Chiefs replace him and find out what life is really like on the other side. It’s likely that only then, when hindsight allows for proper reflection, will we know what Alex Smith really meant to the Chiefs success.
