Why a trade for Richard Rodgers wouldn’t work

There are a few reasons why Rodgers’ addition might not be the best move for either side in this trade—either for the Chiefs or the Packers

First, the Packers have given no indication of wanting to trade Rodgers even though they’ve added both Kendricks and Bennett in a deal. There’s been zero rumors out of Green Bay about a potential release or trade or even an upset player on the depth chart due to the influx of new faces at the position. If there was going to be any sort of move, either because the Packers want to see what they could get in return or because the player was frustrated, one side would float a leak of some sort to see what such a rumor mill might churn up. Instead it’s been completely quiet in Green Bay.

That means that Packers might still see Rodgers as an important piece of the puzzle in three TE sets or in creative formations that would utilize tight ends in new ways. They could also want to hold on to Rodgers in case of injury, if they’re not in any sort of financial straits. If there’s no pressure to make a move, then why make a move at all.

For the Chiefs, the idea that they have to make a move might also be a misnomer. After all, Demetrius Harris has yet to be officially charged, which means no punishment might be coming after all. John Dorsey has preached patience in the process, and he might trust Harris coming back to clear his name and make good on Dorsey’s trust more than he would an import who doesn’t know the plays, the roster, the locker room.

The idea that Rodgers could be a free agent could also play into this. Perhaps Dorsey wants to grab a new body in the draft instead, a player who is cost-controlled for the next four years versus to trade that asset for someone who only has a single year left.

What do you think Chiefs fans? Would you approve the trade? Reject it? Let us know.
