The Chiefs first cornerback addition comes a few rounds too late for many fans who would like to see the team add some considerable competition for the No. 2 spot opposite Marcus Peters on the outside. The Chiefs have been connected with several corners in the first and second rounds in other mocks, largely due to a glass half empty view of the current secondary.

The view goes something like this: Terrance Mitchell looked impressive down the stretch as a midseason addition to the roster but the burst of performance within such a small sample size of six games is reminiscent of Marcus Cooper, who flamed out after a similarly impressive stretch as a starting cornerback. Phillip Gaines, a former third round pick, can’t stay healthy and despite his athletic prowess has yet to stave off competition to secure the spot himself. D.J. White is too raw as a sixth rounder just last year, and Steven Nelson is too small to put outside against much bigger wideouts.

On the flip side, the Chiefs already have plenty of in-house candidates for the outside slot, including Gaines, Nelson, Mitchell and White, and it might make more sense to address other more immediate needs and let the youth have at it. In this way, adding Ezra Robinson in the fifth becomes another body to add to the competition.

Unfortunately Robinson is an odd choice for the Chiefs given the scouting reports that question his toughness. If anything, Dorsey is drawn to very physical, disruptive corners, so while Robinson’s size is big enough and he’s shown himself adept at making plays on the ball (5 interceptions, including 2 for touchdowns), there are other defensive backs still on the board who would more likely match Kansas City’s preferred style.
