Montravius Adams, DT, Auburn

When the Kansas City Chiefs decided to let Dontari Poe walk, it turned a chapter of the team’s most dependable force along the defensive interior. It’s not surprising then that the Chiefs might address the same position early in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Montravius Adams is a big man in the middle, a force for Auburn who turned heads with his incredible size and strength in the Senior Bowl and flashed similarly all throughout his time with Auburn. That said, he does come with an inconsistent tag, but the Chiefs have coached up similar players — ahem, Chris Jones — to great effect.

Adams would be a future play for the Chiefs in the middle given that they signed Bennie Logan to a one-year, $8 million deal to replace Poe, who left for the Atlanta Falcons for about the same contract (give or take $2 million more in incentives for Poe). Logan can re-enter free agency next offseason, and he’s not the only free agent to be among defensive linemen. Jaye Howard will also wrap up his two-year deal and can entertain the free agent market. That leaves Jones, Allen Bailey and Rakeem Nunez-Roches as the only defensive linemen guaranteed to be around in 2018, making Adams’ selection all the more important.

Last season, Adams had 43 total tackles, including 8 for a loss, 4 sacks and 1 interception for the Tigers. He he had 10.5 sacks in his Auburn career.
