The Denver Broncos are no longer the favorites, but they reportedly remain in play for Tony Romo if he’s released by the Dallas Cowboys.

The Houston Texans remain the favorites to trade for or even sign Tony Romo if and when the Dallas Cowboys finally decide to move their veteran quarterback. However, even as they’ve faded from the pack in terms of rumored ties and interest, Troy Renck, Broncos insider for Denver’s ABC affiliate, says the team is still very much interested.

Romo remains, for now, a member of the Cowboys, but the Texans still make the most sense. Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden are their only other options on the roster after trading away Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns. For a team with a stout playoff defense, there’s no way they enter the regular season with those two as their primary tandem.

That said, another team with a strong defense and weaker situation at quarterback is the Broncos, although their depth chart is more unknown than simply not good. Paxton Lynch, the team’s first round pick from last year, doesn’t seem quite ready to step in, although not letting him play could stunt his growth. Trevor Siemian also remains an option for new head coach Vance Joseph.
