Locked on Chiefs: Defensive changes lining up
By Ryan Tracy
The Kansas City Chiefs D-line is undergoing change. The continued shuffling likely isn’t over.
Dontari Poe has made two visits without signing a contract to this point. First, he went to see Chris Ballard with the Indianapolis Colts and later went on to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although Poe has been productive at the NFL level, he seems to be finding a soft market.
On Monday, the Chiefs signed former Eagles defensive tackle Bennie Logan. Coming off a sub-standard 2016 season, Logan looks to return to his natural nose tackle position with the Chiefs. He’s a quality two-down run-stopper that can provide a good portion of what the Chiefs stand to lose if Poe signs elsewhere.
ESPN reported Logan signed a 1-year, $8 million contract on Monday. That doesn’t completely rule out a return to Kansas City for Poe but it does make it a very, very long shot. If he is unable to find the contract he’s looking for, Poe would have to be willing to return to Kansas City at a team-friendly number that number would be substantially lower than it could have been yesterday.
Logan’s contract also does not rule out a draft pick along the defensive line or even at the nose tackle position. The draft class has options the team could be interested in. They may not be done adding pieces to the defense.
