Free Agency Targets

I’ve found four potential veteran additions who should come relatively cheap. With two very young project players it’s unlikely the Chiefs will jump to sign any veteran free agents. So these are the guys I expect may still be available right around draft time.

Matthew Mulligan, Detroit Lions

Since going undrafted in 2008 Matthew Mulligan has been with 10 different NFL teams in his career. He is not a tight end notable for his receiving skills as he’s had just 18 receptions so far in his career. What has kept Mulligan around is his blocking ability. He would likely not be more than a No. 3 tight end with the Chiefs, but could be an important part of the running game.

David Johnson, Pittsburgh Steelers

This is tight end David Johnson, not the running back. Johnson is built like an offensive lineman who stopped growing just a bit too early and stands at 6’2” and 260lbs. Originally drafted out of the 2009 draft Johnson is a textbook blocking tight end. The Steelers have expressed their interest in re-signing him, but already have Jessie James and Ladarius Green on their roster. Having a man like Johnson would give the Chiefs a 1-2 punch in blocking and receiving at the tight end position.

Jacob Tamme, Atlanta Falcons

The second free agent tight end from Atlanta, Jacob Tamme. The veteran free agent is arguably the most complete package of the group. Tamme has totaled over 500 receiving yards 3 separate times in his career. Despite being on the smaller side at 6’3” and 230lbs is a willing blocker most effective in the run game and in space. Tamme would be most effective in this offense as a blocker on screens, jet sweeps, and outside runs. The bread and butter of the Chiefs rushing offense.
