The Kansas City Chiefs finally made official the release of Nick Foles, giving the team such much needed salary cap space.

The writing was on the wall for some time. The Kansas City Chiefs finally made the release of Nick Foles official on Thursday, just hours before the official deadline for the new league year to begin. Perhaps it was a signal that the Chiefs were hoping to find some last minute trade value for Foles.

Foles will now find himself competing with other free agent quarterbacks in the hopes of snagging a potential starting role. Given the reported big money deal given to Mike Glennon by the Chicago Bears, Foles will find some opportunity with plenty of money. The Minnesota Vikings were rumored to be interested in Foles, who would likely want to create some competition for incumbent starter Sam Bradford. Other teams make plenty of sense for Foles as well, from the Philadelphia Eagles where he’s played before to the Cleveland Browns who could use a reliable veteran.

The Chiefs will feel the breathing room of having Foles’ $6.75 million now off the books, and will likely use most of that space to re-sign Cairo Santos and Daniel Sorensen to their qualifying offers as restricted free agents, depending on what offer sheets they sign, if any.
