With the end of the NFL Combine, the start of free agency has begun. This year, the Chiefs should take time off and study for the draft.

I know this is not a popular opinion, especially if you look at social media. It seems every time a new name gets added to the list of free agents, there are multiple articles and opinions on if the player is a good fit for the Kansas City Chiefs. While I can appreciate the curiosity and dreaming involved in doing this, at times it seems like overkill.

There are seasons when free agency is a great tool, and it’s one the Chiefs have used to great benefit in the past. Signing Mitchell Schwartz before last season was a great signing to solidify the offensive line. The greatest free agent signing in my lifetime as a Chiefs fan was the time they signed running back Marcus Allen. That move helped the Chiefs get all the way to the AFC Championship game.

Both of those moves filled major holes on the Chiefs roster. The number one reason the Chiefs don’t need to get involved in free agency this year is that they don’t have any major holes. They have an offensive line locked in for at least three years. They also have a solid wide receiver core that is young and productive when given the opportunity. The defense brings back every member of a top five defense except for nose tackle Dontari Poe. The Chiefs are deep along the defensive line, though, and can fill his spot internally with players like Jaye Howard, Chris Jones or Rakeem Nunez-Roches.

The only small holes the Chiefs have are at middle linebacker next to Derrick Johnson and running back. These positions have players who can work as players get drafted to compete for the spots. The draft this year is deep at both middle linebacker and running back, so they can fill these small holes via that route.
