NFL Combine 2017: Myles Garrett, Joe Mixon and 4 other winners
By Matt Conner
Kevin King, CB, Washington
Speaking of Washington prospects, Kevin King needed this week. There were some concerns about King’s ability to play at the next level, to keep up with the crisper routes, the quicker throws. Can he play inside at 6’3 against smaller, shiftier players in the slot? Does he have the speed to recover and keep up on the outside?
King has the great length for a team who demands press-man coverage from their corners and he can certainly be physical. But now at the NFL Combine, he also showed that his athleticism is actually better than most. He beat every other Combine performer — all 300 of them — in the 3-cone drill with a time of 6.56 seconds. He also bested everyone in the 20-yard shuttle with a time of 3.89 seconds. In fact, the latter wasn’t even close. He also finished in the top 10 of all Combine performers in the vertical jump.
Questions of quickness, athleticism and response should be answered, but it is a different game with the pads on. That said, King’s core abilities are all there, and some teams likely moved him much farther up draft boards after an incredible performance in Indianapolis.
