NFL Combine 2017: Myles Garrett, Joe Mixon and 4 other winners
By Matt Conner
John Ross, WR, Washington
Chris Johnson had to congratulate him. NFL players flipped out in response to him. When John Ross broke Johnson’s near-decade old record for the fastest 40-yard dash — the most popular drill and most-often quoted stat by far of all Combine metrics — the world sat up and took notice. He was trending on Twitter and Facebook. Columns were written. Fans were made. His draft stock soared.
Ross was already a first round talent, but any chance of him accidentally slipping into round two is now out of the question. Ross was competing with Clemson’s Mike Williams and Western Michigan’s Corey Davis as the top wide receiver in the NFL Draft and the first round was going to shake one of them out to likely fall a bit. Davis, after not performing at the Combine, is now faced with a bit more pressure for his coming Pro Day.
For the team who lands Ross, they’re hoping that not only his world-class speed will translate well to the more physical pro level but also his nose for the end zone. Ross had 17 touchdowns last year for Washington.
