Chiefs rumors: Dontari Poe makes sense for the Colts
By Matt Conner
Dontari Poe makes a lot of sense for the Indianapolis Colts, from the Chris Ballard connection to their need along the defensive line.
The Kansas City Chiefs have let Dontari Poe know that they want the defensive tackle to come back next year, but he will be allowed to test the free agent market. One such team who might make it difficult for Poe to return is the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts have a new general manager who is very familiar with the Chiefs roster, since Chris Ballard is one of the key men who helped put much of the team into place. The Colts have been soft against the run and, in general, along the defensive line, making this an ideal match if Ballard believes that Poe will be worth the high dollar contract he’s likely to demand.
Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star recently identified Poe as a free agency candidate for the Colts to pursue. He writes:
"This is admittedly based on a good bit of speculation. We’re connecting the dots. The Colts have a need on the defensive line, the Kansas City Chiefs have a surplus of really good defensive players, and Ballard recently came to the Colts from the Chiefs."
The Colts could use some youth and impact along the defensive front as David Parry faces some legal issues and Arthur Jones gets older. Poe would immediately be the most talented defensive lineman for the Colts, a player who would immediately make the jobs of every other defender that much easier.
Last season, Poe had 27 tackles, 3 passes defended, 1.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble.
