One report has John Dorsey telling people that he’s not interested in exploring any free agent additions after signing Eric Berry and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.

Is the offseason already over for the Kansas City Chiefs? The report from Tony Pauline seems a little silly, but it’s worth mentioning (and examining) that Chiefs general manager John Dorsey is “out of the free agent market” this year.

"General manager John Dorsey has told people here in Indianapolis that the Kansas City Chiefs are out of the free-agent market after the team recently re-signed safety Eric Berry and guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif to large contracts."

The Chiefs have certainly been the NFL’s busiest team over the last week. They’ve released Jamaal Charles, signed C.J. Spiller, extended Berry and LDT and now they’re interviewing prospects at the NFL Combine. The rest of the offseason is likely to seem soft in comparison to such a frenzied few days, but it’s ridiculous to think that Dorsey is going to tell anyone about his free agent plans, especially ones that issue such a blanket statement about any and all player acquisitions.

The Chiefs are likely to release Nick Foles to create additional room, and there is something to be said for adding veterans at every level of the defense. Dorsey also surprised everyone with a last minute veteran addition at quarterback last year with the Foles signing. Is he now ready to roll with Tyler Bray and a rookie addition in the draft? Or will he decide once again that a known quantity is better if something happens to Alex Smith?

There’s simply too much offseason between now and the regular season for Dorsey to sit back and not kick the tires on available players. The Chiefs are deeper than most NFL teams, but no franchise has the luxury of saying they are “done” before free agency even begins.
