Darrelle Revis rumors: Do the Kansas City Chiefs make sense?

With the news that Darrelle Revis is heading for free agency, we are obligated to at least ask the question of whether or not it makes sense for the Chiefs.

The New York Jets are rumored to be releasing perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis soon, a move that comes on the heels of his alleged assault of two men in a fight.

Given that Revis is a big name and that he will be hitting the open market, every fan base is likely to ask the same question: is our team a good fit for signing Revis? When it comes to the Chiefs, it’s an interesting proposition that comes down to one primary thing, first and foremost: money.

Revis has always commanded top dollar and seems very smart about squeezing every dollar out of the team he is signing with. He inked an incredible 5-year, $70 million deal with the Jets, but now that he’s turned loose, it will be interesting to see whether Revis is more concerned about winning or making as much money as he can before his playing career is officially over. Rich Cimini of ESPN did mention that Revis was open to taking a pay cut, so maybe there’s some possibility here.

What is clear is that Revis is not the same player that he used to be. He’s no longer the shutdown corner that he once was, the NFL’s best cornerback and a likely Hall of Fame player. Revis Island existed for some time, but those days are behind him. That said, Revis is still a solid enough player and name draw in the secondary.

The Chiefs are certainly in need of someone at cornerback to step up: whether that’s D.J. White surprising everyone in year two, Phillip Gaines living up to his potential or a new name entering the picture to push everyone through competition. The Chiefs are often linked to a cornerback in mock drafts even in the first round, so adding Revis to be the guy opposite Marcus Peters could make sense.

But if Revis isn’t starting material, if his play has slipped that much, he will have zero potential to play for the Chiefs. There’s no room for an extra corner or safety who will not play special teams, and this is a longshot even as a starter. I’d expect Revis to stick around some familiar territory and maybe even return to New England on a team-friendly deal loaded with incentives.
