4th Round

The Chiefs need a guard eventually but not in the 4th round. Guard does not have a lot of prospects so there wouldn’t be a need to reach. John Dorsey drafts with the best player in mind, not always the need. That being said, an edge rusher could be gold in the 4th round. Guys like Tyus Bowser and Jordan Willis could still be available for the Chiefs’ pick. If not, Noble Nwachukwu will be ready to learn behind Justin Houston and Tamba Hali.

This pick does not make Dee Ford expendable at all but it gives the Chiefs a replacement for Hali. Nwachukwu has a high motor and quick moves both inside and outside. He will need to develop his ability to break contact once engaged. He has the makings of a perfect third rusher when the Chiefs want one on the same side as Houston.

5th Round

Athleticism is the key when looking for a guard in the west coast offense. Reid likes guys that can pull from either side in run defense and get out and block on screens. Dorian Johnson is the best this draft can offer after the third round. He excels in pass protection with a good base and quick feet. He will need some coaching to become a better run blocker, especially on linebackers.

Because of the lack of guards this year, he may not be available for the Chiefs pick in the 5th. Here is where a trade could come in handy. By parlaying their two 5th and extra 6th round picks they can move up maybe even into the 4th and grab Johnson. When the Chiefs get Parker Ehinger back next season, either Zach Fulton or Laurent Duvernay-Tardif can fill the other spot until Johnson is ready. Johnson’s height and weight make him a possible backup to the tackle position as well.
