Broncos rumors: Russell Okung will hit free agency
By Matt Conner
The Denver Broncos did as expected and told left tackle Russell Okung that they will be making him a free agent.
While the NFL draft class is thin for the offensive line as a whole, the free agent market just got a bit richer with news that the Denver Broncos were waving goodbye to Russell Okung by declining to pick up his option. The move makes Okung immediately available for any team to sign and it also gives many teams an intriguing option.
For the Chiefs, it’s interesting to note that the division rivals are suddenly down to another serious hole on the roster. The team has slipped from the top of the division and now seem to be on the verge of losing potentially several major players. Last year’s free agency stripped the team of performers like Malik Jackson and Danny Treviathan, and this year they are expected to potentially lose more, including DeMarcus Ware and former Chiefs OT Donald Stephenson.
Okung will likely not be in the mix for the Chiefs, who could definitely be interested in a swing tackle but not at the price that comes with signing Okung. However, it’s a positive that the Broncos will be in the market to address another major need this offseason. Is it possible the Broncos fall even farther from grace? Losing Okung doesn’t send them reeling, but it certainly means there is serious work to do for John Elway and company.
