This is one of the more stunning moves of the John Dorsey era, with the Kansas City Chiefs releasing KeiVarae Russell.

In April, the Chiefs went up to the podium at the 2016 NFL Draft in Chicago and selected cornerback KeiVarae Russell with a third round selection. On Wednesday morning, the youngster was released. This all goes in the category of what the hell just happened?

Kansas City must have really liked Russell to take him so high, but something clearly went wrong in a big way. How could a kid with so much perceived potential fall so flat on his face, especially at a position of great need?

One has to wonder if something deeper is happening here. Teams almost never cut a third-round pick in the first season or two, let alone this early in his first campaign. Is Dorsey looking to make some kind of trade? Who fills his roster spot? There is going to be much more to this story as the day goes on.

Keep checking back throughout the day as we will continue to monitor the roster situation. For now, the Chiefs have 52 players on their active roster, but expect that to change very quickly.
