Locked on Chiefs: No Jamaal Charles in Week 1?

The biggest news from the press conferences on Monday is that the Chiefs don’t believe that Jamaal Charles will be ready to play on Sunday.

In past seasons this would be a huge concern. This year the Chiefs have capable backups in Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. They should be able to sustain offensive success without their best player.

The Chiefs added corner Julian Wilson to the practice squad on Monday and it looks like the corresponding move is that they released Daniel Munyer. This is a little surprising as the Chiefs already had six corners on the active roster. They have actively churned the practice squad over the past couple of seasons. Originally the Chiefs had 10 players that had been to training camp with them on the practice squad and this now moves them back to 9. I can’t remember a time in the past couple of seasons where that many practice squad guys were from the Chiefs training camp roster.

The nugget that could slip by most people is a comment from John Dorsey. He was asked if he already knew the cut that would have to be made on Saturday to activate Eric Berry. Dorsey pivoted the question and answered by saying that a move had to be made but it doesn’t necessarily mean someone would have to be cut.

So do they have a player they are ready to put on IR? Is there another player suspension coming up that they know about that we don’t? Or is it possible that Dorsey will be making a trade of a player between now and Saturday in order to be at the 53 man roster limit?
