For many of the reasons that I will point out in my individual game notes I believe the Chiefs are ready to hit the ground running in the regular season. I have seen enough from the Chiefs now to feel good about the 2016 season. Yes, there are still some question marks that I will keep an eye on in the regular season (outside pass rush, cornerback play, Parker Ehinger) but I’ll be 100 percent comfortable if KC decides to rest all of their starters on Thursday to keep them healthy and rested for the regular season.

The Chiefs starters have looked like the superior team in all three preseason games despite their 1-2 record. There is no need to risk an injury against the Packers. The only game that matters now is the season opener against the San Diego Chargers.

Like the previous two weeks I’ll break my game notes into offensive and defensive notes starting with the offense.

OFFENSIVE NOTES:

*I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but I am really impressed with how Alex Smith has looked this preseason. He was 20 of 30 for 181 yards on Saturday and for the entire preseason he is now completing almost 70% of his passes and averaging almost 7.7 yards per attempt with zero interceptions. Yes, its the preseason, but Smith has looked as comfortable as I’ve ever seen him since he came to Kansas City.

He looks like he has total mastery of the offense and trusts both his offensive line and skill position players more than he has in the past. If Smith stays healthy for the entire season I would be genuinely surprised if he didn’t post the best numbers of his career. In fact, the passing game has looked good enough that when you combine it with a talented running game I feel like this offense could be the best we’ve seen in Kansas City since the Dick Vermeil era.
