Why 2016 will be Eric Berry’s last season with the Chiefs

I’m not assigning any blame here. The Chiefs aren’t solely at fault for failing to get Berry re-signed. As they say, “it takes two to Tango.” Berry may have had no real intentions of staying in Kansas City despite the reports. It’s also possible that he wanted to stay, but the Chiefs weren’t willing to pay him $11-12 million per year. We’re unlikely to find out which side was the biggest obstacle to a new contract. Although, I do think there are clearer answers about how this plays out in the future.

There’s a good chance that Berry either preserves his open-market value or logs another Pro Bowl-caliber season and earns himself even heavier coin. If the Chiefs couldn’t get him signed at his current value, it isn’t plausible to think they’ll do it next year with a bigger contract looming for Poe. Though if I’m being honest, stranger things have happened in the National Football League. I suppose we should never say never.

What are the odds that the Chiefs can get Berry re-signed following the 2016 season? Were you surprised to hear reports that the sides didn’t agree on a single term during the negotiation process? If you had to choose which player to extend, would it be Berry or Poe? Use the comment section below to start the discussion. As always, we appreciate your readership and support.
