Chiefs remain built for the future
By Ben Almquist
Phillip Gaines – There will be a lot of pressure on Phillip Gaines to step up and take on a starting role this season. He’s flashed talent in his first two years, but both seasons have been cut short by injury. He needs to stay healthy and play at a high level. However, if he can acquit himself as well as he has in the past, the Chiefs may have a solid pair of corners to build on.
Keivarae Russell – Keivarae “Ferrari” Russell has become a fan favorite on Chiefs twitter. And he comes with a moderate amount of fanfare as he looks to be a potential bargain as a third round pick.
Of course, as with all rookies, he has a lot to prove and deliver on, but the upside is notable. And if Russell can develop, he’ll give the Chiefs options when it comes time to start negotiating new contracts for this young secondary.
Steven Nelson – Nelson came on late in the season as the Chiefs slot defender, and he played pretty well. He fits the bill for that position, and if the coaching tandem of Emmitt Thomas and Al Harris can get him to further develop, he could be a dangerous tool.
DJ White – The word “steal” has been used a few times when talking about the Chiefs 6th round pick. He’s got a lot of natural ability for the coaching staff to work with. And with there being several other players ahead of him now, he should have time to further develop that talent into workable skills.
You can find more young, talented, players on this roster. The truth is that John Dorsey has done a pretty fair job at trying to tool the roster for the future. We have young stars, role players, and guys with some serious potential. That’s what you like to see when you’re talking about the future of the franchise.
