Chiefs championship window could be closing
Dorsey has done a great job of bringing in young depth, but there is no guarantee Ramik Wilson can become Derrick Johnson. As is evident thus far, there is no guarantee Dee Ford is the next Tamba Hali. These players are getting older. You can’t expect them to perform the same. More importantly, you cannot assume the next guy up will be another reliable performer for a decade plus. We take the Hali’s, Johnson’s, and Jamaal’s for granted.
Speaking of Jamaal Charles, his situation should be very interesting in 2016. This is a player who’s prime was arguably vacuumed away by the Chiefs, and he finds himself in a spot where he must perform in 2016.
If he is not the same player, KC banks on what they have in a small sample size of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware. Ironically enough, even if Charles proves he belongs to stay, he could have to go in order to gain some cap relief. Or in other terms: disposing of what was part of the championship window in order to potentially preserve it. Another sign things could be changing.
Which brings us to free agency. It giveth and taketh. And it took Sean Smith away this past spring, right into the hands of the Silver and Black. Dorsey did what he could, but you can’t expect to keep everybody. Now with the recent events, Berry might feel disrespected and have his own agenda next offseason. I don’t believe he is that type of guy, but who truly knows? Could be bon voyage.
Dontari Poe is also a key free agent in 2017 who will command big money. This is all while Kansas City finds themselves severely strapped for cap space in the next two years. But it’s not all about the money. Cap room can always be found by restructuring, waiving, and trading pieces. It’s about timing. It’s about having the right guys at the right time. Losing Poe and Berry could be a detriment to that.
