I’m convinced that Dorsey will exhaust every effort to keep Berry in Kansas City for the foreseeable future. I also tend to believe that Berry’s reported interest in staying put isn’t just lip service. It’s those two things that lead me to believe they’ll get this done in the 11th hour (much like they did with Justin Houston in 2015). It’s not time to panic, but the next three days of negotiating are crucial.
If the sides can’t reach an agreement before the deadline, I have little faith that Berry stays in Kansas City. The franchise tag is a significant payout, but doesn’t come with any real sense of security for players. Berry wants the comfort that only a multi-year contract can offer. Let’s not forget that organizational commitments to veterans like Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali are likely the catalyst to the good faith they’ve shown Chiefs brass over the years. Either of them could’ve defected for richer deals with other teams.
If you had to hazard a guess, will Eric Berry be a member of the Kansas City Chiefs for the next several years or will 2016 be his last hurrah at One Arrowhead Drive? Does Eric Berry deserve a eight-figure salary? Between Fisher, Poe and Berry, which of them is most vital to the future success of the team? Use the comment section below to weigh in.
