Quarterbacks

Key Players On Depth Chart:
Alex Smith
Aaron Murray
Tyler Bray
Kevin Hogan

Positional Grade: B-

Depending on who you talk to this grade may be seen as either too harsh or too generous, but as is usually the case the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The Chiefs have a solid proven starter in Alex Smith. Smith is a proven winner both in the regular season and the playoffs having now lead both the 49ers and Chiefs to playoff wins in his career.

That having been said, even Smith’s strongest supporters wouldn’t call him one of the NFL’s elite signal callers. If I were giving the grade based only on Alex Smith I think I would still give them a B- at quarterback.

If my grade for Smith would be a B- and I gave the entire position group a B- then obviously my grade for KC’s depth at the position is similar. The Chiefs quarterback depth has one huge plus and one huge minus. The plus is that they have plenty of young talent that can be developed in the trio of Aaron Murray, Tyler Bray, and Kevin Hogan. With a QB guru like Andy Reid as the coach having that young quarterback talent on the roster is a huge plus.

The problem is that none of them have any NFL starting experience. In fact, none of them even have any NFL regular season playing time. The battle for the second and third QB spots is basically wide open and should be one of the most interesting to watch in training camp. So after giving credit for their potential and then docking them for lack of experience it puts me back in that “B-” range.

The Chiefs don’t have a problem at quarterback, it’s just not a huge strength either.

Next up, the running backs.
