For the last three seasons, we have seen this Chiefs team claw and fight. Start the season the dreaded 0-2? Dig ourselves out and almost reach the playoffs. Start the season 1-5? No problem, we will reel off 10 straight. I know most of you had the thoughts I had when it looked dreary early last fall. It was such a familiar scene, the crashing down of another regime after buying into all of the hype. I had begun calculating if the Chiefs would have a shot at Jared Goff. We had all seen this movie before.

Turns out we hadn’t. In fact, no team but one in NFL history had, the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals. The 70’ Bengals and 15’ Chiefs are the only teams to ever reach the playoffs after starting 1-5. This does not happen without great leadership at the top and everyone buying in to the program. You need a certain type of locker room. You need the Tamba Hali’s, Derrick Johnson’s, and Eric Berry’s. And you also need guys with some gusto. Fighters.

Reid and Dorsey have made it a habit to acquire these guys. Drafted in the third round in 2013, Travis Kelce may be considered the league’s best tight end after Rob Gronkowski. Kelce is flamboyant; he likes to have a good time out on the football field. He is gonna “Hit the Quan” after scoring a touchdown and not think twice. Is he cocky? Yup, but he presents an image for this team that screams we are here to play. His message: these are not the old Chiefs.
