Aaron Murray: In the race for the backup quarterback spot, there will be a winner and a loser.  While some fans will want to see Tyler Bray’s name up here, the simple truth is that the UDFA would not be a “surprise player” for the roster bubble…but the 5th round pick?  Sure.

Here’s the biggest issue facing Murray: he spent two years as an understudy to career backup, Chase Daniel.  Yet now that Daniel is out of the picture, Murray is still not in line yet for the top backup job.  Yes, he’s in the mix and is getting reps, but in reality he should have had this job locked up.

And with the presence of Kevin Hogan on the roster, it’s pretty clear the Chiefs intend to make a decision on Murray and Bray here soon.  There’s the chance that both get on the roster this year and the “mysterious IR” happens again, but I think that would require both of them to really step up a lot.

Murray is at least in control of his own destiny here.  He’s currently getting the #2 reps, so as long as he makes the most of them, he should continue to hold that spot down.  But if he slips, he opens the door for Tyler Bray to come in and take over.  But for both of these young quarterbacks, the time is now to show the organization that they are worth any investment at all.  If they can’t do that, both could potentially be on the roster bubble…Murray would just be the “surprise.”
