Kansas City Chiefs: Top 10 games of all-time
4. Super Bowl I – Green Bay Packers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Well, you can’t win them all. The Chiefs did make history however by getting into Super Bowl I by winning the American Football League championship in 1966, beating the Buffalo Bills at War Memorial Stadium.
Kansas City was a huge underdog going into the game, facing off against the Green Bay Packers of the established National Football League. The two leagues had agreed to merge in 1966 and the game would serve as a milestone, with it being the first game between the AFL and NFL.
In fact, the game was not known as the Super Bowl, bunt as the AFL vs. NFL Championship Game.
The Chiefs kept the game close through the first half against the defending-champion Packers coached by the iconic Vince Lombardi, trailing by a 14-10 count. Unfortunately, a Willie Wood interception early in the third quarter against Len Dawson would begin an onslaught, leading to a 35-10 rout.
So why does this game go so far up the list? The importance. Despite losing, Kansas City was involved in one of, if not the most, important games in pro football history. While the Chiefs would have loved to come out on top, this has to be considered among the very best contests in franchise history.
