Kansas City Chiefs: Top 10 games of all-time
10. 1997 Week 12 – Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs
This game was an absolute eyesore throughout most of the contest, so why is it on the list? Keep in mind the 1997 Chiefs were a very good, 13-3 outfit that reached the AFC playoffs as the top seed and this game was a huge part of that.
It also happens to have one of the best endings in franchise history in front of a delirious crowd.
After falling behind 13-0 in the second quarter, Kansas Cityy staged a dramatic comeback thanks in large part to some good field position and a questionable pass interference penalty. y the third quarter, the Chiefs had a 21-13 advantage until three Jason Elam field goals put Denver up one point in the final minute.
Instead of allowing John Elway to claim another fourth-quarter comeback, Rich Gannon drove the CHiefs to Denver’s 38-yard line with four seconds remaining. Pete Stoyanovich then came on and drilled a low line drive that cleared the cross bar by about six inches. Game over. Chiefs win.
Kansas City was outgained 397-202 on offense and took 11 penalties, but found a way to beat the favored Broncos. It was glorious.
While the season unfortunately ended in the Divisional playoffs with a loss to Denver at Arrowhead, this win will always last in Chiefs lore.
