2. Derrick Johnson

If not for the comeback story that Eric Berry authored from his bout with cancer this season, we would be talking about the incredible persistence of Derrick Johnson on a daily basis.

Many believed Johnson’s career would be over after suffering one of the most brutal injuries in sports with a torn Achilles tendon in Week 1 of the 2014 season against the Tennessee Titans. As Johnson was being carted off the Arrowhead Stadium grass, one had to wonder if Johnson would ever play again.

Not only did Johnson return to the starting lineup for Kansas City, but he also did not miss a single practice and played in all 18 games last season. The stalwart was able to get back to his old form, making both the Second-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors look like a sure thing.

Johnson, 33, is the attitude and muscle of the Chiefs defense, showcasing an incredible blend of anticipation, speed and power. He’s become one of the greatest linebackers in franchise history, which is quite a statement considering the history of the red and gold at that spot.

Last year, Johnson racked up 116 tackles, giving him his fifth season of 100+ tackles. He also added four sacks and a pair of interceptions, giving him 26.5 and 13 in each respective category. Not bad for an old guy who many thought to be finished.
