James O’Shaughnessy is a wild card, perhaps more than any other player on the roster outside of cornerback.

He was not given a massive opportunity to play, coming into the NFL as a fifth-round pick out of a small school. In fact, he simply had to have a good training camp to make the team, and was able to do so while splitting time behind Travis Kelce with veteran Demetrius Harris.

On the field, O’Shaughnessy played in seven games, catching six passes for 87 yards. His season ended prematurely with a foot injury, with the Chiefs placing him on the injured reserve list. Now, O’Shaughnessy finds himself in a battle once more to win a job behind Kelce, this time taking on undrafted second-year man Brian Parker.

Although the sample size was extremely limited, O’Shaughnessy looks to have some talent. He’s big at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, and he has nice speed. Nobody is going to confuse him with Kelce, but he looks like a guy who could provide a nice option in a two-tight end set when Reid plans to throw. Harris is a better blocker by miles (Parker is as well), but O’Shaughnessy might have the highest ceiling down the field.
