Chiefs all-time quarterbacks: power rankings
5. Steve DeBerg
Many will remember DeBerg as a stopgap quarterback while the team was trying to find a better player. That is definitely true, but there is so much more to the story than that for DeBerg, oneof the most underrated quarterbacks in recent NFL history.
DeBerg came into the league as a 10th-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys before breaking onto the field with the San Francisco 49ers in 1978. DeBerg would last until 1998 (he did not play from 1994-97) when he was 44 years old. He came to the Chiefs in 1988 and lasted through the 1991 season, before Kansas City moved onto the Dave Krieg era.
DeBerg took over a team with a loser’s attitude and helped turn around the culture in Kansas City, perhaps the hardest thing to do in all of sports. DeBerg was decent throughout his time in red and gold but was brilliant for the 1990 season, throwing 23 touchdowns against four interceptions. He also played hurt, dealing with a broken pinky that had a pin inserted.
People will look past DeBerg, but he along with Marty Schottenheimer were huge reasons why the Chiefs started to win and win big in the 1990s.
