The dust has now settled from the 2016 NFL Draft, as it came to an end this past Saturday.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, this means that nine new players from the league’s annual selection show will be donning the red and gold this season. Out of those picks, one of the more intriguing players that KC added was former Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan.

He was taken in the fifth round by Kansas City, and looks to have a legitimate chance to battle for the team’s backup quarterback position this year behind starter Alex Smith, after the departure of Chase Daniel earlier this offseason. Hogan, of course, was former No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Andrew Luck’s successor at Stanford and ended his career as the all-time winningest signal caller in school history.

If Hogan turns out to be anything like Mr. Luck, you can be almost certain that the Chiefs brass will be ecstatic about that.

If you take a closer look into his career numbers while playing for the Cardinal, it’s easy to see why he is regarded as one of the best players at his position to ever come out of their vaunted football program. The Mclean, Va., native threw for 75 touchdowns in his collegiate career, including 27 during his senior season with the cardinal and white.

He also put together an incredible touchdown to interception ratio of nearly 3:1 during that span as well. Hogan also proved that he can run the ball effectively as well, as he ended his Stanford career as the school’s all-time rushing leader as a QB, rushing for an impressive 1,249 yards and 12 touchdowns.

With the addition of Kevin Hogan, this begs the burning question if he can become Kansas City’s QBOTF. This is a lofty question when you consider the fact that the organization hasn’t had much success over the years with drafting quarterbacks. In fact, the last QB to start and win a game that KC has drafted was former first round bust Todd Blackledge in 1987. This is an alarming stat that just seems to continue to haunt the franchise more and more as time goes on. That being said, it’s very possible that Hogan could be the man to finally end that ugly streak once and for all in the future, but obviously the jury is still out on that for now.

Although he was passed over by all 30 teams multiples times in the draft, Hogan’s intangibles suggest that he has many things that can make him a potential franchise QB for the Chiefs. First off, he was known as a strong leader in his college days, after being named as a team captain for two straight seasons to end his career at Stanford.

He also possesses a high football IQ and strong work ethic, which will come in handy when he has to dissect opposing defenses at the next level. Hogan is also an accurate passer, including in the short, intermediate and deep passing attack. His arm strength is also very good and he displayed solid pocket presence while at Stanford as well. This is all without mentioning that he will have the added benefit of playing for offensive guru and head coach Andy Reid, who has been known to work wonders with a variety of signal callers throughout his great coaching career.

With all of this being said about the Chiefs’ newest QB, let’s not forget about the current in-house options that the Chiefs have in Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray. Both have shown glimpses of promise in their limited action in preseason games for the Chiefs. It’s also still possible that Hogan might not even make KC’s 53-man roster out of camp, let alone being able to beat out Murray for the backup spot. From a personal standpoint, I really believe that Kevin Hogan has a decent chance to be the quarterback that the Chiefs have been looking for for all these years if given the opportunity. But, will the Chiefs give him that opportunity once the time comes?

Let’s hear it, Addicts! What do you think of Hogan’s chances of becoming the quarterback of the future for the Chiefs?
