Murray and Bray put on notice

I’ve been pretty vocal (as it were) on my displeasure with Aaron Murray’s inability to unseat Chase Daniel prior to his leaving in Free Agency this year.  Those who disagreed often responded with something that said Murray would take over the top backup spot once Daniel was gone, and everything will be fine.  Well…that would seem to not be the case.

In fact, you could probably say the Chiefs did the exact opposite and put both Murray and Tyler Bray on the hot seat by adding Stanford QB Kevin Hogan in  the fifth round.  Now, some will say that this puts Bray in danger more than Murray.

Well…that’s really just pure opinion.  The truth is that there is absolutely no tangible evidence that really separates those two.  Murray was the draft pick, but Bray got a second contract.  Both were highly touted coming out of college.  And neither has done squat in the NFL.

It’s hard to imagine Kevin Hogan not making this team.  If you’re talking about a guy who replaces Daniel and would fill in well for Alex Smith, Hogan is actually pretty ideal.  His strong points line up pretty well with both of those players, and works well for the West Coast Offense.

That is not an endorsement of him as the QBOTF…merely stating that his skill set works well for a backup option that wouldn’t disrupt the rest of the offense.

So one of the incumbents is likely to be sent packing this offseason.  In my opinion, it’s Murray who will get the short end of that stick.  Hopefully that will come via trade as there should be some potential that another team liked him in the 2014 draft.  But regardless, there will be an interesting camp battle this year…especially when you factor in how much Chiefs fans love their backup quarterbacks.
