6th Round – Pick 178
D.J. White – CB – Georgia Tech

AA Grade: C+

My thoughts: I’m not going to beat around the bush, this pick isn’t terribly exciting. At this point the Chiefs had already drafted two corners and I think most fans were hoping to fill other needs with this pick. I get the logic, the Chiefs need more guys that can contribute at corner and since draft picks aren’t sure things the more guys you draft at a position the greater the odds that you hit on a good one.

The Chiefs were clearly after a certain type of corner as D.J. White shares some similar traits with both Russell and Murray. He is a little short to play outside at 5-foot-11 and 193 pounds but has good speed (4.49 forty) and strength (17 bench press reps).

When you put White’s tape on you see a corner with good press man abilities (which fits KC’s system). He seems to have good coverage instincts but doesn’t create a bunch of turnovers. When compared to Eric Murray he is less physical but may have slightly better technique. I again don’t see elite upside here, but the potential to be a solid NFL corner.

If KC hadn’t already drafted two corners this pick probably would have graded out higher based on the player so the mediocre grade has more to do with the players they passed on to draft White than with White himself. I for one would have preferred a few different offensive line prospects that were still on the board.
