Chiefs War Room: EDGE & Big Board – Draft Science 2016 Finale
By Ryan Tracy
Current Sack City
The Chiefs enjoy a tradition on high-end quarterback hunters. When we look at the athletic profiles for the current pass rushers and one new potential athletic standout; we see that Houston leads the pack athletically. Old School Tamba Hali is actually the least athletic pass rusher here and these measurements are admittedly a decade old.
While similar in profile, Dee Ford and the newcomer Tautvydas Keiras display the ying-yang of PowerM and SAQm. Focusing on pure pass rush, all-around linebacker Frank Zombo wasn’t included. He fe ll below all but on the athletic matrices.
2016 EDGE Draft Class
This draft class has some interesting options to offer, although none are on par with the three AFC West leaders. The top two days contain possible selections to help the Kansas City OLB depth and rotation.
Noah Spence (3-4OLB) offer teams the most balanced attack grading out well in PowerM and SAQm. Notably, Joey Bosa does the same for the 4-3 teams. Beyond those two prospects, no one is within the power range of the current Kansas City pass rushers.
Leonard Floyd achieved the top overall MAm grade in the edge class. Clearly, his game relies on his explosion and SAQm rather than power. That could be a concern for teams hoping he can develop strength and add to his frame.
Silique Calhoun and Kamalei Correa offer SAQm ability akin or surpassing the Chiefs’ current pass rushing group. Best described as Von Miller ‘bend’ type rushers, Calhoun brings well rounded athletics plus size and arm length on par with Houston and Ford. Correa shows elite pass rusher SAQm. Unfortunately, his weight and arm length make it hard to see him as a full time pass rusher.
Emmanuel Ogbah and Jordan Jenkins are two players that can lineup at 3-4OLB due to their explosion and power. Both lack lateral quickness but have shown to be successful pressuring the passer. Both will be at home shifting into even fronts as well.
