Round 2 – Pick 59

My Pick: Xavien Howard – CB – Baylor
6-foot-0 – 201 pounds

Since I don’t believe there will be a corner that’s a fit for KC still on the board in the first round I’m REALLY hoping Xavien Howard is still there in the second round. I’m a little scared that he won’t be and if that’s the case I don’t think the Chiefs will take a corner in this spot. That means that KC wouldn’t address the cornerback spot until the fourth round or later. So for the sake of the 2016 season, I’m really hoping that either Jackson/Apple is there in the first or Howard in the second. Otherwise the Chiefs are another Phillip Gaines injury away from real trouble at the position.

Howard would be a perfect fit for KC’s system. While he’s not near as big as Sean Smith his six foot and 200 pound frame is big enough to play on the outside in KC’s press man system. He may not be huge, but he does play physical and has enough speed and ball skills to be a good NFL starter. His technique needs some work, but I trust the KC coaching staff to get the job done.

Other players I like that could be in consideration:

Joshua Garnett – OG – Stanford
Christian Westerman – OG – Arizona State
Hassan Ridgeway – DT – Texas
Von Bell – S – Ohio State
Sterling Shepard – WR – Oklahoma

Joshua Garnett is one of the top pure guard prospects in this draft. He is strong enough to start right away and create push in the run game. He’s not a great athlete and will need some technique work. Westerman is the opposite, he’s athletic and has solid technique but isn’t as powerful. If KC wants a guard that can start from day one in the second round Garnett or Westerman could be their guy. I really like Hassan Ridgeway and he has as much potential as any DT in this draft. He has some injury and conditioning concerns, but if KC passes on the DL talent in the first round Ridgeway could be a steal in the second. Von Bell may not make it to KC in the second round, but if they want a coverage safety that could see the field on day one next season Bell would be a solid pick. I would LOVE it if Shepard was available here. He might be my favorite receiver in this entire draft and he would flourish in Reid’s offense as a slot receiver. Unfortunately, he’s good enough that I doubt he slides quite this far.
