4th Round

Jatavis Brown – OLB/S – Akron

Strengths: A superior athlete with a non-stop motor.  Phenomenal speed and athleticism for a LB.  Big hitter with solid technique.  Great body control to get around blockers with ease.  Has a nose for the ball and lives in the backfield.  Meticulous in his preparation and is a student of the game.  Team-first mentality with a desire to be a part of everything.  Reported to “love” Special Teams.

Weaknesses: Undersized for a linebacker, and a little shorter than teams like for a safety.  Short arms which can allow blockers to swallow him up.  Can be too focused on the ball carrier and miss everything else going on around him.  Can play overly aggressive and will bite on play fakes, double moves, and misdirection.  Can tend to lower his head when making tackles which allows craftier ball carriers to get loose.

The Fit: Another player I’m returning to the well for, Jatavis Brown is the ideal candidate to fill that 3rd safety role in Kansas City.  If he were bigger, scouts would be talking about him as a legit 1st round pick at OLB due to his athleticism and dominance in the opposing backfield.

As it is, the Chiefs are in an ideal position to utilize his talents at a position where his size isn’t a big deal at all.  He may need a season or two to learn his new role…but that kinda works out perfectly with the Chiefs bringing Jimmy Wilson and Stevie Brown in on one year deals.
