1st Round

Mackensie Alexander – CB – Clemson

Strengths: Legit shutdown corner with the tape/resume to prove it.  Nimble feet and quick hips allow him to stick with his opponent.  Solid speed to keep up downfield.  Technique on film is close to flawless.  Student of the game.

Not afraid of anyone on the field.  Has the “island corner” mentality.  Uses the sidelines extremely well to make up for lack of height (ala Brandon Flowers).

Weaknesses: Lacks the ideal height teams are looking for these days.  Limited in his exposure to different techniques in college, so there may be a learning curve.  Confidence can be borderline arrogance at times.

The Fit: Recent weeks have seen Alexander slipping behind Eli Apple and Will Jackson on a lot of media big boards.  That’s fine with me.  Alexander might be the best cover corner in the class.  He doesn’t have the elite physical traits of Apple or the gaudy stats of Jackson, but his tape shows a shut down corner who was able to stick with every player that was thrown at him.

He was getting the Darrelle Revis treatment from teams that featured Will Fuller (ND), Pharoh Cooper (S Car), and Sterling Shepard (Okla).  That’s as solid a resume as you could ask for.  The Chiefs secondary gets better the second he steps on the field.
