Chiefs’ bigger threat: Raiders or Broncos?
Are the Oakland Raiders or Denver Broncos a bigger threat to the Kansas City Chiefs?
Typically, this would be a ridiculous question. The Kansas City Chiefs are not the reigning AFC West champs and the not only are the Denver Broncos the holders of that distinction, but they also won the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the Oakland Raiders went 7-9 last year and missed the playoffs for the 427th straight year.
However, this is anything but a typical situation.
Kansas City appears to be very strong heading into 2016, with most believing it is the favorite to take the division crown. The Chiefs only lost Sean Smith and judging from John Dorsey’s comments on Tuesday, the team might not be without Justin Houston for all that long. Oakland went out and added Smith, along with Bruce Irvin and Kelechi Osemele. Factor in the maturation of Derek Carr and Amari Cooper, and the Raiders are dangerous.
Meanwhile, Denver has been ravaged this offseason. Broncos fans can spin it anyway they like, but they lost starting quarterback Brock Osweiler and replaced him with Mark Sanchez. The defense watched Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan leave for more money, along with guard Evan Mathis. The team also cut tight end Owen Daniels and signed Donald Stephenson. We know how atrocious he is.
At this point, it seems like the Raiders are going to be the bigger threat. You absolutely still have to fear and respect Denver’s defense, but this is a team with no offense and no quarterback to speak of. Also, Denver was almost perfectly healthy last year. History says that won’t happen two years in a row.
