Many people, both on this board and nationally, have been attaching Ohio State Buckeye talent to the Chiefs in the upcoming NFL draft. And rightly so, as their roster and their team is both really deep and really talented. However, I’m going to attach a name that hasn’t been truly attached to the Chiefs, and it may come as a surprise. Quarterback Cardale Jones.

I will preface the remaining portion of the column with this comment. How the Chiefs view their future at quarterback position just how truly valued a quarterback in this upcoming draft is.  We can all analyze and evaluate and argue over what player or what position the organization needs and when, but in reality, how John Dorsey and Andy Reid view their roster and the draft talent will dictate what they do.

I view the quarterback position, long term, as a great area of need. Alex Smith is approaching the point where he’ll want an extension to provide security. One would have to imagine Smith and his agents would approach the organization asking for a contract extension after this upcoming season. Not saying he’ll hold out, just saying, the Chiefs will not be able, in all likelihood, take Smith to the end of his deal.  Chase Daniel was kept around last year in part because of the lack of development of Aaron Murray and the injury to Tyler Bray.

The Chiefs had hoped Bray or more likely Murray would have been able to unseat Daniel as the backup. That didn’t happen. One has to wonder at this point if the Chiefs organization truly trusts Bray to stay healthy (also, he’s hardly practiced in two seasons) or for Murray to develop past what he was in college. It is with those thoughts in mind that I put the quarterback position higher then others who view draft picks this year needing/wanting to be dedicated to helping this team win next season.
