Will Kansas City Chiefs trade up?
By Nick Floyd
Is there a possibility of the Chiefs moving up in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft?
The Kansas City Chiefs and the entire NFL are edging ever closer to the 2016 NFL Draft. With the draft getting closer every day our very own Arrowhead Addict writer Ben Almquist put together a great mock draft for the site.
In his mock he has proposed the Chiefs trading with the Cleveland Browns over the Chiefs first-round pick. In return for the pick the Chiefs would receive second-round pick (#32 overall), fourth-round Pick (No. 99 overall), seventh-round Pick (No. 223 overall), and receiver Josh Gordon. This is incredibly interesting. The Chiefs would get a possible boom-or-bust in receiver Josh Gordon. If he could get his act together the once great wide receiver would make a great player opposite current Chiefs receiver Jeremy Maclin.
Realistically this makes a lot of sense, however, when it comes down to it it may be a pipe dream, but a great pipe dream to say the least. This made me think, if the Chiefs could move down would they? Probably they would, since they have lost a couple draft picks from the Maclin scandal, adding more value picks would be good for the team.
General manager John Dorsey knows the value of those picks and if an opportunity to gain more would arise he may just jump on it. However, would he be willing to go the opposite way? Is there a team out there who might be willing to deal so that the Chiefs could move up in the draft and pick up and instant starter for the team?
Taking a look at potential suitors for the Chiefs is looking slim, especially if they are looking to move up. Dorsey is also the kind of general manager that does not draft for a need but rather the best player available. So the question about trading up comes down to is if there is a player that the Chiefs cannot live without, and within a reasonable range. If they have to climb too far for that player it becomes too big of a risk. There is no way the Chiefs would trade into the top 10, without packaging the deal with a star player on the team; and there is no player that would appear to be on the trading block.
For now Ben looks to have the right idea for trading out of the first round with a team and picking up some extra picks this draft. Whether or not Dorsey does this remains to be seen, but with his track record it is so hard to predict what he might do. The Chiefs are in a weird position at 28, you can still get a key player yes, but there are so many good prospects that could fall into the second round. So it would make more sense for Dorsey to trade out of the first and gain a few more picks than trade up in the draft.
What do you think, Addicts? Do you think Dorsey would be willing to trade up, or trade out of the first round? Let us know what you think in the comments.
