7th Round (#223)

Halapoulivaati Vaitai – OL – TCU

Strengths: Built for the job with a frame that would make him unmistakable as an NFL lineman.  Quick off the snap and has the agility to mirror and match most defenders.  Strong enough to win with his initial push off the ball and keep the defender off balance.  Plays very controlled and doesn’t lose his head.  Has good arm length to establish control of his opponent and move them away from the play.

Weaknesses: Doesn’t live up to his first impressions.  Though quick off the ball, he can get beat in space by quick twitch pass rushers.  Isn’t as powerful as his frame would suggest, which may be a weight room work ethic flag.  Technique can get sloppy, resulting in playing with a high pad level and losing leverage.  While playing under control is good, a bit more fire would certainly be appreciated.

The Fit: Even if the Chiefs can plug Spencer Drango in at left guard early on, there is still the question of depth for this offensive line.  Andy Reid will need to keep the back end of the OL group churning until this team is prepared to go two or three deep in its depth chart across the line.

I don’t feel like we’re there yet.  Vaitai has good size, strength, and athleticism to be used in multiple spots as a utility lineman.  Put in the mix with guys like Pughsley and Munyer, the team should be able to generate the kind of competition that will allow the cream to rise.
