7th Round

Deon Bush – S – Miami (FL)

Strengths: Ideal build for the position, with the athletic ability to play at the NFL level.  Versatile player that was used in a variety of roles.  True football player who plays with a tough guy attitude.  Has quality ball skills and vision to roam the middle of the field.  Utilizes his entire body when tackling, which leads to excellent form and very hard hits.  Quick enough to change direction on misdirection routes.  Reads the QB very well.

Weaknesses: Struggles with route recognition and can get himself out of position.  Will play over aggressive which gives WRs an opportunity to get by him.  Has a tendency to duck his head and leave his feet in an effort to make a big hit, which can leave him grasping at air.  Injury problems will be a major concern.  Has the talent to be top tier prospect, but loses focus and plays inconsistent.

The Fit: I’ve said it twice already, and it’s no different now:  The Chiefs need help in the secondary.  Coming into 2015, Deon Bush was considered by many to be the top S prospect in the class.  However, injuries and inconsistent play have hurt his draft stock a lot, and he hasn’t done much to fix it.  The talent is there, but a team is going to have to put in work to get him to live up to his potential.  Fortunately, the Chiefs don’t need an immediate starter and can afford to be patient with someone like Bush.
