Chiefs draft: Secondary preview
By Ben Almquist
Will Redmond – Mississippi State
Scout’s View: Has lockdown skills, but needed the extra seasoning in 2015 as he was often in a nickel role in 2014. Has decent size, plays physical and gets bonus points for ball skills evident in return game. The former four-star recruit (6-foot, 185 pounds) posted 51 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups last year. ~ Mel Kiper (ESPN)
Top Comparison: Kyle Arrington – Baltimore Ravens ~ Staff Scout (NFL.com)
My Take: Redmond has turned some heads and his stock is picking up steam. Unfortunately, there is very little game film to really study on him as he has only started seven games in his college career. He has excellent speed and quickness to keep his coverage both deep and in the short area. Doesn’t quite have the size the Chiefs like, but isn’t dramatically undersized. I love his versatility and aggressiveness, which makes me think KC could definitely find a home for him in their secondary.
Really, Redmond could be a great match with Phillip Gaines as both show the versatility to play inside or outside techniques. The ability to move them around could really work well for the Chiefs in preventing teams with deep wide receiver groups from forcing bad match ups. He’s not my ideal pick for the Chiefs, but I would not be the least bit upset if they grab him.
