Chiefs draft: Secondary preview
By Ben Almquist
Kendall Fuller – Virginia Tech
Scout’s View: Sources say that Fuller didn’t look good in his brief 2015 action, as the junior was playing with an MCL sprain, but looking back at his sophomore tape has teams extremely excited. They feel that Fuller was a true lock-down corner that season, and some teams have given him a first-round grade based on his sophomore-year tape. Some teams feel that Fuller is the best cover corner in the 2016 NFL Draft. ~ Walter Cherepinsky (Walter Football)
Top Comparison: Tramon Williams – Cleveland Browns ~ Dane Brugler (CBS)
My Take: Fuller is one of the hardest guys in this draft class to grade. He showed a ton of natural talent in 2014, and many scouts thought he had the inside track on being the top corner this year. However, a torn meniscus wiped out his chance to prove that. Even more concerning is the fact that he hasn’t yet recovered from it. If healthy, he does have quality cover and ball skills. The big concern, though, was that he seemed to lack top end speed and quickness. He could get beat by the better athletes he faced. That’s concerning heading into the NFL.
While most outlets are still giving Fuller a second round grade, I’m actually dropping him to the late third on my board. As I said, his speed and quickness were already concerning before he tore his meniscus. And with him still not being able to run the proper drills to show that he’s healed up, those concerns are magnified. Fuller could be a real boom or bust pick, but with the Chiefs need for a guy who can start early, the gamble just isn’t worth it at this point.
