3rd Round
Javon Hargrave – DL – South Carolina State
Strengths: Powerful and big with strong hands to control blocker, and a thick lower body to hold his ground. Excellent athleticism and quickness for a man his size. Great burst off of the ball to catch offensive linemen by surprise. Flexible to make tight turns when asked to twist or stunt. Lives in the backfield and gets after the quarterback extremely well.
Weaknesses: Will show a tendency to stop his momentum if first move is stalemated. Can get distracted by the “trash” going on around him or on the ground. Brings the natural concerns that every FCS player has in regards to competition level.
The Fit: Hargrave may be “the best player you hadn’t heard of” in this draft. Coming from an FCS school, there was very little hype for him, but he absolutely dominated at the Shrine Game practices. His athleticism is very impressive for a man of his size, and he shows good understanding of how to use it properly to gain the advantage. The Chiefs may be losing both Jaye Howard and Mike DeVito this year, so bringing in some more talent along the defensive front is definitely prudent.
The draft class is loaded with quality defensive line prospects, so Hargrave is a bit of a steal here in a general sense. While I did take into account it was against FCS opponents, I still had a very hard time finding anything not to like in his game film.
